On 17 September 1946, two years after the Battle of Arnhem, the film "Theirs is the Glory" opened in Arnhem, London and Ottawa (Canada). The film concerns the Battle of Arnhem. Although it is only a film, there are some special aspects. Most of the actors are British soldiers who actually took part in the battle and were quite familiar with the actual situation. They returned in August and September 1945 for the filming. During their stay here, the first airborne commemoration took place at the then simple Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek. The film is an accurate depiction of the Battle of Arnhem, with the added value of being a historical documentary. Most of the shooting took place in and around Oosterbeek. Several historical locations were filmed, such as the former Hotel Hartenstein, the headquarters of General Urquhart. Since 1978, it has housed the Airborne Museum.
This year
marks the 60th anniversary of the film's premiere. In that context, the film
is released on DVD with Dutch subtitles. A special anniversary
package has been put together. Besides the film "Theirs is the Glory",
Angelique Krüger presents an extra film that shows special
locations and special people related to the film. There is also a booklet
with details about the film and a replica of a plaque that was
also passed out 60 years ago during the premiere.
On
9 September the first copies has been presented to the mayor of Renkum, P.
Bruinooge and to Ben Van Dillen, who appears in the film as a two-year old
toddler..
